Helen's Kitchen

Instructor Positions

Are you a geeky cook or baker? Do you love to teach?

We are looking for culinary instructors who are passionate, inquisitive, entertaining, and down-to-earth. Whether you are reading this before your shift at a fine restaurant or from the desk at your boring office job, you might be just the person we are looking for.

A successful applicant must:

  • have a well equipped home kitchen that can fit up to 8 students for a class (all our teachers teach in their own kitchens)
  • be able to produce fabulous food
  • be comfortable talking for 3-4 hours (this is not a job for introverts!)
  • have experience developing, testing, and writing recipes
Nice to have:
  • restaurant experience
  • culinary school
  • teaching experience (doesn't matter whether the subject was food, history or Calculus!)
  • food writing experience
  • a systematic approach to developing cooking techniques that work (think Cook's Illustrated)
  • a solid understanding of ingredient properties (types of fish, cuts of meat, etc.)
What we'll provide:
  • Training in how to teach cooking classes
  • Help with turning your kitchen into a good learning environment
  • A class of enthusiastic students
  • Competitive compensation
How to apply:

E-mail us your resume and answers to the following questions:

  1. What's the last interesting cooking technique that you've tried? It could come from absolutely anywhere: a dish you had in a restaurant, a magazine, a book, a blog, experimentation, etc. What aspects of this technique work well? What are some drawbacks? How does it compare to other techniques of cooking that ingredient?
  2. Tell us about some ingredient that you have recently discovered and cooked. What did you like/dislike about it? How would you cook it in the future? Was it something you didn't like at all and don't think you'll buy again? Tell us why.
  3. Food reading. What's the last thing you've read that you found inspiring? We are looking more for techniques than food romance here.
"Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all."
